Youth With A Mission (YWAM) is a global movement of Christians from many denominations dedicated to presenting Jesus personally to this generation, to mobilizing as many as possible to help in this task, and to the training and equipping of believers for their part in fulfilling the Great Commission. As citizens of God’s kingdom, we are called to love, worship, and obey our Lord, to love and serve His Body, the Church, and to present the whole gospel for the whole person throughout the whole world.
We of Youth With A Mission believe that the Bible is God’s inspired and authoritative word, revealing that Jesus Christ is God’s son; that people are created in God’s image; that He created us to have eternal life through Jesus Christ; that although all people have sinned and come short of God’s glory, God has made salvation possible through the death on the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ; that repentance, faith, love and obedience are fitting responses to God’s initiative of grace towards us; that God desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth; and that the Holy Spirit’s power is demonstrated in and through us for the accomplishment of Christ’s last commandment, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone” (Mark 16:15).
YWAM was founded in 1960 by Loren Cunningham. He had a vision of waves, which where hitting every nation of the world. These waves where actually people, thousands and thousands of individuals, who went out to every country to preach the gospel and disciple the nations. Back then the main focus was to get young people involved in missions. That was done by short term outreaches to different locations.
While we still focus on youth, today we have people of all ages and walks of life involved in short and long term missions. We are an international and interdenominational movement of Christians with about 20,000 volunteers who are serving as full time staff, known as "YWAMer". We have teams going to the most remote places as well as the largest cities.
Where ever we go we work together with local communities, the body of Christ, social workers, and others, to bring positive change to this community. Be it by preaching the gospel on the street, cleaning up a suburb, helping those in a crisis situation, discipling individuals and groups, teaching about healthcare, and in many other ways.
Every individual YWAM location and all YWAMers world wide share the same faith, vision, and values. We are connected through national, regional, and international elders. However, since we are a family of ministries, operating on the basis of voluntary accountability, we do not have a hierarchical, top-down organizational structure. YWAM operates decentralized. Our teams of elders provide wisdom and guidance, as they get guided by God, through prayer but also their spiritual advisor.
This encourages new vision, cultural adaptability, and exploration of new ways for training, mercy ministries, and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Motto of YWAM is “To know God and to make Him known”. We are called to have a close relationship with the living God. But also, based on His word in Mark 16:15, to make God known to others, according to our calling, skills, and gifts, where ever He calls us to be.
The three pillars of YWAM are Training, Mercy Ministries, and Evangelism. It is our desire to get to know God better and seek Him in prayer. We get biblical based training from speakers who teach out of their own experience, not theory. We want to pass on what we know and have learned about God and His principles, so that others may also get to know God and learn more about Him.
At the same time we want to be practical by helping those in a crisis situation, who need help with living a sustainable live, in whatever situation people might find themselves in.
